Five Christmas Penguins
Before pulling out the counting mats, read Five Christmas Penguins. It’s a cute board book by Steve Lenton. Tots and preschoolers will enjoy the illustrations of the silly penguins as they prepare for their Christmas party. The large text and large pictures make this the perfect Christmas activity book for little ones.
Each two-page spread is brightly colored and engaging. There is a number word, numeral, and corresponding number of penguins on each two-page spread, as well. See if your tots can count the penguins. Can you preschoolers spot the number word?
Counting with the Penguins
After you’ve read Five Christmas Penguins with your tots and preschoolers, let them practice counting. To prepare your counting mats, just print and laminate them. Or, you can slide your counting mats into a plastic page protector.
Help your little one identify the large number on each of the penguin preschool counting mats. If you have play-doh, your child can roll a play-doh snake large enough to “trace” the number on the mat.
If your child needs to practice writing numbers and number words, they can trace the number and number word with a dry erase marker if you’ve laminated the page or slipped it in a page protector.
Finally, it’s time to count! Have your little ones fill the frame with play dough balls, buttons, or mini penguin erasers to represent the featured number.
Extend the activity for older learners by having them use 2 different colors of playdough or buttons or two different counters to create addition problems on the five frame. For instance, 1 black button + 4 white buttons = 5 buttons.
The key is to have fun learning with this book-based preschool math activity!
