Fill your shelves with a great collection of Halloween children’s books. These picture books are perfect for holiday reading.
I love adding holiday books to my daily lessons. I like to have a variety of picture books, easy readers, and chapter books on hand to meet the needs of everyone in the room.
These picture books are perfect for kids to read independently, and they’re engaging enough to be used as read-alouds as Halloween approaches.

Halloween Children’s Books
Below, I’ve featured just a handful of Halloween picture books that will help your students celebrate Halloween.
You should be able to find them at your local library or bookstore. If you can’t find them locally, you can click each image cover to purchase them on Amazon.
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown – It’s Halloween night, which means costumes, trick-or-treating, bobbing for apples…and waiting for the Great Pumpkin. Linus is certain that the Great Pumpkin will rise out of the pumpkin patch to bring toys to all the children of the world. Could this be the year that it finally happens?
Room on the Broom – The witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick when the wind picks up and blows away the witch’s hat, then her bow, and then her wand! Luckily, three helpful animals find the missing items, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom.
Pumpkin Jack – The first pumpkin Tim ever carved was fierce and funny, and he named it Jack. When Halloween was over and the pumpkin was beginning to rot, Tim set it out in the garden and throughout the weeks he watched it change.
Happy Halloween, Stinky Face – Stinky Face is getting ready for Halloween when he has a question–which of course Mama knows the perfect answer to! Even though Stinky Face can think of a million things that could go wrong while trick-or-treating, Mama knows that no matter what happens, he’s going to have the best night ever. That is if he can settle on a costume!
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything – Once upon a time, there was a little old lady who was not afraid of anything! But one autumn night, while walking in the woods, the little old lady heard . . . clomp, clomp, shake, shake, clap, clap.
Snowmen at Halloween – After an early snowfall, a few kids build some snowmen before going trick-or-treating. And when the kids go off to bed, the snowmen have their own Halloween festival! There’s candy and apple-bobbing and costume contests and all sorts of autumn activities. When the kids wake up the next morning, the snowmen are gone… but they’ve left a very special message behind.
Bonaparte Falls Apart – Bonaparte is having a tough time. It’s hard for this young skeleton to just hang loose when he can’t keep hold of himself.
Pete the Cat: Trick or Pete – Pete loves Halloween and candy but not so much scary surprises. Follow Pete as he goes trick-or-treating from house to house and discover what is waiting behind each door.
It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse! – Mouse is excited for fall because that means it is time to decorate pumpkins! But one is missing. Where could it have gone?
Little Blue Truck’s Halloween – Beep! Beep! It’s Halloween! Little Blue Truck is picking up his animal friends for a costume party. Lift the flaps in this large, sturdy board book to find out who’s dressed up in each costume! Will Blue wear a costume too?
One, Two…Boo! – The littlest trick-or-treaters can lift the flaps to count their way through a spooky old house . . . but they had better be prepared for a few surprises!
Clifford’s Halloween – Clifford and Emily Elizabeth are celebrating their first Hanukkah. They love hearing the story of Hanukkah, eating “latkes” (fried potato pancakes) and “sufganiyot” (fried jelly donuts), and playing dreidel.
The Night Before Halloween – Little monsters and goofy goblins take center stage in this silly, spooky spin on Clement C. Moore’s beloved poem. But what will happen on Halloween when the monsters come face to face with human trick-or-treaters?
Pinkalicious: Pink or Treat! – Superhero Pinkalicious finds a way to save Halloween when it looks like it will have to be cancelled—have a party in the park, complete with pink pumpkins!
The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat – It’s Halloween and Brother and Sister can’t wait to go trick-or-treating with all of their friends, but when someone in the group encourages the kids to play a trick, things don’t go as planned.
