Books and activities to celebrate all month long! This December read aloud book and activity calendar is perfect for preschool and elementary educators.

I cannot believe we are already at the end of another month. It’s crazy how quickly time flies these days. My November read-aloud calendar was such a hit that I decided to make it a monthly series.

So, continue reading for another amazing list of books and activities that is full of ideas for all of the fun holidays you and your students can celebrate this December!

December Read Aloud Calendar

December is full of fun, off-the-wall holidays in addition to the known holidays we celebrate every year. This book list {and printable calendar} is a great way to celebrate all month long!

December Holiday Read-Alouds

December is full of obscure holidays you and the kids can celebrate in your homeschool or classroom. Take a look at the selections below:

December 1 – Eat a Red Apple Day

Read Apple Tree Christmas. Students can then make some homemade cinnamon applesauce ornaments. They’ll smell amazing hanging on the tree this year.

December 6  – St. Nicholas Day

Read The True Story of St. Nicholas. This set of free Saint Nicholas printables is a great follow-up to the story.

December 7 – Letter Writing Day

Read Dear Santa Claus. After listening to this book, children may be inspired to write their own letters to Santa. Here is a printable Letter to Santa stationery page they can use.

December 8 – National Brownie Day

Read If You Give a Mouse a Brownie printable. Afterwards, kids will definitely want to bake some brownies. To include some additional learning fun, you can print out this If You Give a Mouse a Brownie printable pack.

December 12 – Poinsettia Day

Read The Legend of the Poinsettia. How about painting some simple poinsettias when you’re done with the story?

December 13 – Ice Cream Day

Read Ice Cream: The Full Scoop. Of course, it’d be fun to set up your own ice cream bar on this day!

December 14 – Monkey Day

Read Merry Christmas Curious George. I love these handprint monkeys. You could even add a construction paper Santa hat to make him Christmasy.

December 15 – Lemon Cupcake Day

Read Camilla the Cupcake Fairy. Today would be a great day to do some baking. How about some lemon cupcakes to celebrate the day!

December 18 – Bake Cookies Day

Read The Gingerbread Man. Bake and decorate gingerbread men today.

December 20 – Go Caroling Day

Read Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Kids can make their own Rudolph ornaments. Here’s a tutorial for Rudolph and Clarice ornaments. Here’s another version of Rudolph.

December 21 – Winter Solstice

Read The Shortest Day. Here’s a list of ten indoor activities for winter. Try one of these fun ideas today.

December 25 – Christmas Day

Read  The Christmas Story. Celebrate with loved ones today!

December 27 – Make Cut Out Snowflakes Day

Read cut out snowflakes. Here’s a great collection of templates to make a variety of cut out snowflakes today.

Books and activities to celebrate all month long! This December read aloud book and activity calendar is perfect for preschool and elementary educators.

For the rest of the month (before Christmas), I suggest the following books:

'Twas the Day After Christmas: A Lift-the-Flap StoryAnimals in Winter (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science)Snowmen at Night (Storytown Library, Grade K, Story 8)The Mitten

Whether you’re reading chapter books all month long or reading a picture book each day, this list of books should be more than enough to get you started. Want a little help? I’ve created a December Read Aloud Calendar that you can print out and hang in a prominent place in your academic space.
